Description

The costs of healthcare continue to be a concern of the federal government, insurance companies, and managed-care organizations. Much of the effort to cut costs has been focused on hospitals. To identify the sources of costs to treat patients in University hospitals, the University HealthSystems Consortium (UHC) [1] has compiled a database that identifies the source of expenses for different hospital services for each diagnosis-related group (DRG). The database has been developed from the experience of many University hospitals. Medicare has assigned separate DRGS to some conditions based on the age of patients. The information in the UHC database enables an assessment of the influence of a patient's age on the total non-physician costs of managing these conditions. Medicare does not classify most conditions according to age, so that the same DRG is assigned to both children and adults. Where age classifications have been established, the age 17 years is usually taken by Medicare as the break point for assigning a patient with a specific disease to an age-related DRG.
